Fish Lake

(nr Loa UT)
Fish Lake is one of the few natural mountain lakes in the state of Utah. Obviously, it’s popular with fishermen. But, it also has one of the world’s largest aspen groves.

I really liked Johnson Valley Reservoir just to the north. A smaller lake, but more secluded and fewer people. Spent some time near the dam, and hiked the trail along the Fremont River.

Coming in, I took UT-72 over Hogan Pass at 8,975 ft. At the top, there was a viewpoint looking east toward Cathedral Valley, which is the north end of Capitol Reef NP. To get to Fish Lake you go west on UT-24, and then north on UT-25 and up to around 9,000 ft.

I spent a few days in the area while awaiting some mail to arrive in Loa. Dumped waste tanks, took on fresh water, and refilled propane. And also, did laundry. After getting the mail, I got groceries and filled up on gas. Then, headed toward the next big thing.

Utah really is a beautiful state. And th think when the Mormons were escaping their persecution they stopped there because they thought no one else would want to settle in that area.

Yes, it was a bit unexpected. But, remember that much of that territory had not yet been explored. Without modern conveniences, it is still pretty rugged terrain.

I don’t know if you have read Louis L’Amours Sackett series but what may his best writing takes the trip from England to California through 17 books. Some were in the Mountain West. Those explorers really had determination to get it done.
