Percha Dam

(Arrey NM)
I spent a few days at Percha Dam State Park in southwest New Mexico. A quiet, small campground along the Rio Grande which is overlooked by many. That was my second time there.

Unfortunately, there was no water over the dam, and very little in the river. I suppose mostly due to the extended drought for the past several years. The many trees were showing fall colors, and with a view of the mountains in the distance it was very peaceful.

There were a few easy trails through the woods by the river. Each day I walked a different path finding that they each had a different ambiance. I really enjoyed that.

I chose a non-electric site by the river and dam. A respectable distance from the hook-up sites favored by most campers. That was fine by me, as I had the whole area to myself. My stay was free thanks to my having the Annual Camping Pass.

Good morning! I found your blog through RVSue’s blog–my Mom is an artist who painted plein air during the years she & Dad were snowbirds. She continues to paint, primarily in pastels & acrylics, & is a member of a co-op gallery in Olympia, WA. Not bad for 86!

Thank you for this post about Percha Dam. Jim & I plan to spend time in NM parks once we’re both retired the end of the year & this one looks like a winner. We, like you, would take the dry camp in the quiet spot.

What are you working on right now? What is your process as you travel? I apologize if this is in your blog & I haven’t read it. Take good care & enjoy your day.

Nice that your Mom continues her painting. Hope I can last that long. If you like quiet, then you will probably like Percha Dam. There is another similar camp just five miles up the road; look for my post about Riverside.
