Mittry Lake

(nr Yuma AZ)
Mitty Lake Wildlife Area, north of Yuma along the Colorado River, is jointly managed by the BLM and Arizona Game and Fish. It is a wetlands region with a boat ramp, vault toilet, dumpsters, and a few jetties for fishing.

Tall bulrushes lined the gravel road that wound along the marsh with a few free campsites along the way; and a ridge overlooking the lake with room for several RVs. Most spots did not appeal to me. At the far south end, I finally found one that I liked. It was a bit more off the road, and next to a small dam with a pond.

The camp was just big enough for Tardis to fit, and had a nice view from all sides. It turned out to be the entry for Betty’s Kitchen trailhead and day use fee area. A few cars drove in and then right back out again. Otherwise, just some fishermen were about, and no other RVs or ATVs, making a quiet camp for a couple of days.

There was a little spit of land behind the rig, jutting out into the water, with a stone fire ring. It was an ideal spot to relax, watch the coots diving for dinner, and to see the moon rise in the evening.

I’ll bet the sound of water flowing over the small dam made for good sleeping and thinking time for you. I can almost imagine it myself. Have fun!

It sure did. Also, provided ‘white noise’ to cloak unwanted intrusions. A very pleasant spot for a camp.

It’s the kind of place I’d like to kick back and just enjoy the peace and quiet.

A little further off the road would make it ideal. Evening, after everyone was settled in for the night, was the quiet time. It would work for a tent camp too; you should consider it.
