San Pedro

(nr Sierra Vista AZ)
About six miles east of town was the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area with the former ranch house now serving as a gift shop and info center. Next to the house were panels explaining about the local animals and plants, and the preservation efforts to save the wetlands area along the river.

An easy trail took me to the San Pedro River, then followed beside it for a ways, in the cool shade of tall trees. The path eventually looped through a grassy area leading back to the house. The short hike gave a pretty good feeling for the riparian habitat.

At the ranch house were paths, with native plants, that took me to a log cabin under a huge 120 year old cottonwood tree. An old water tower stood nearby a picnic table shelter. The preserve was supposed to be popular for bird watchers.

Back in Sierra Vista, I resupplied groceries, propane, gas, and fresh water. And, also dumped the waste tanks. Then I went looking for a camp in the forest. It was nothing special; but, had a view of the mountain and served well for an overnight with internet.

Nice place. I’d like to drink some ice tea from inside the screen porch. Looks like a peaceful place.

As kids we used to swim in the north flowing San Pedro, had to be careful of quicksand. Must be off season for bird migration.

I’m not a birder, however I’ve seen very few birds this spring.
