Musical Highway

(Carnuel NM)
A unique experience can be had while driving eastbound along a portion of the Old Rte-66 highway. By going the correct speed over a short stretch of slightly grooved pavement, a vibration from the road surface will play a very well known tune. What a hoot!

Organ, fan, statuesques

Musical Highway

To find it from I-40 east of Albuquerque, take Exit-170. Then go east on the historic Old Rte-66. Around mile-marker 4, when the highway becomes 2-lane, look for a sign that says “Slow to hear Music”. You must be going 45MPH for the correct tempo, and to clearly hear the tune. And, your passenger side tires must ride over the grooves visible by the right shoulder. Oh, it might also help to turn off your air-conditioner and roll down the windows.  BTW, it only occurs when driving eastbound.

There happened to be a wide gravel pull-out just after the music ended, where I turned around. However, you could continue east on Rte-66/NM-333 to the town of Tijeras in order to rejoin I-40.

I thought it interesting, and special enough to mention it to my readers. If you are passing that way, it might be worth a short detour.

Since you didn’t tell us the title of the music I guess I’m going to have to get out my maps and route myself over that route on my next trip to the east.

That was the plan. I didn’t want to spoil the anticipation for those that might venture.
