Tallulah Gorge

(Tallulah Falls GA)
Being 2 miles long and almost 1,000ft deep, Tallulah Gorge was a spectacular canyon located in northeastern Georgia. There were several trails around the rim, and down into the gorge providing a variety of difficulty. Access was via a state park with a very nice Visitor Center that had exceptional displays.

I hiked a portion of the North Rim trail which provided wonderful views of the canyon, and passed by several waterfalls. It was an easy walk just outside the VC, and with little elevation change.

Since the trail was along the rim, views were all from well above the river and waterfalls. They would likely have been more impressive from down below. However, only a limited number of special permits per day were provided for access to the canyon floor area.

Tempesta Falls

A metal staircase with 550 steps got you to a foot bridge suspended 80ft above Hurricane Falls. I made the attempt, but turned back part way down. It was pretty steep, and I dreaded the idea of walking back up.

The weather was near perfect, and lots of trees provided shade. Here and there were places to rest and appreciate the views. Even though there were  scads of people, I still enjoyed the walk.

The pictures are so good I almost get dizzy looking down into the gorge! I wasn’t bothered by heights until just a few years ago.

I too sometimes get wheezy from heights. Not always; so, I’m not sure what happens. Maybe getting older does it?

Exquisite scenery. The falls and canyon views are stunning and the fall foliage is just incredible! I’ve added this stop to my 2017 destination plans. Was it cold?

The weather was pleasantly warm for the end of October. There was more to explore in the immediate area; so, be sure to look around when you go.
