Salmon Ruins

Salmon Ruins was built as an outpost of the Chacoan Culture. The pueblo was located near the San Juan River and about 50 miles north of Chaco. It was inhabited over the years by different groups; so a mixture of construction styles was apparent.

The site had a small museum with artifacts excavated from the site, and displays about the history of the pueblo and region. Also, a study library, gift shop and patio overlooking the area.

A printed guide was provided highlighting things seen on the path leading to and through the ruins. There wasn’t a lot remaining; but, the basics of rooms, courtyard, small kivas and a grand kiva were visible.

Next to the museum was a small park with a path leading past different living structures used by later groups. For example: wickiup, tepee, hogan, cabin with explanations for each. The ruins were smaller than others I’ve seen; but, still worthwhile for a visit.
