The Gate

(nr Gateview CO)
The Gate was the name of a gap on the trail leading into the San Juan Mountains from the north. At that point, the road was close to the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River. The large rock formation and tall cliff marked the spot for earlier travelers.

Now, there is a bridge across the river leading to a small campground. It was a pretty location with tall pines, and rapids on the water. I had thought to camp there, but continued on instead.

Rock Formations & More Wildflowers

The plan was to spend a couple of months exploring these high, cool mountains, boondocking, hiking, biking, and photographing the beautiful scenery. I was also hoping to see lots of wildlife. The small, historic village of Lake City would be the hub for the first portion.

Campsite with More Wildflowers

The night before, I had boondock camped off of Sapinero Mesa Rd (also known as the Lake City Cutoff). It was a nice spot at over 8,900ft, in the tall pines, and surrounded by wildflowers. The temperatures were a nice respite from those at lower elevations.
