Leasburg Dam

(Radium Springs NM)
Stopped at Leasburg Dam State Park wondering if there would be much water in the river. I was glad to see the Río Grande full, and it made a pretty sight pouring over the dam.

There were fishermen trying their luck, a few kids splashing in the water, and a family having lunch at the picnic tables enjoying the view. I walked the trail that parallels the river for a short way.

The river is dammed in several places for flood control, and to provide irrigation to farmers. Also, much of the water is promised to Texas and Mexico. In a good year, between March and July, the flow is high and swift.

Trail along the River

Colorado had above average snowfall this past winter, and it has rained more frequently this spring and summer. As a result, there has been plenty of water this year. What a blessing when nature is behaving well.
