Scottish Festival

(Lincoln NH)
Another day at the Scottish Highland Games and Festival. There were many activities related to Scottish and Highlander culture. Music, stories, attire, seminars, traditions, foods and drinks, family and country history were all included.

Scottish Festival – Pipers Practice
Pipes & Drums Competition

Traditional music with bands and individuals entertained visitors, and competed for the best performance. Bagpipes, drumming, and drum major were featured. You could hear them practicing and performing all over the festival grounds.

Troubadour Charlie Zahm
Highland Dancing Competition

Story tellers, comedians, and troubadours performed. A historical Scots encampment had re-enactors that showed the skills and lifestyle during the Highlander period. Highland dancers competed, and demonstrations of the country dance strathspey, reel and jig were held.

Clan Village Tents
Roll Call of the Clans

Clan Village had tents and booths representing the various families or clans of Scotland. At a certain time, the clans paraded into an arena where a roll call was made to recognize them. One clan was chosen to lead and to introduce the others.

Strathspey and Reel Demo
Seminar on Gaelic Languages

After enjoying many events, we attended a few seminars. Among many, we chose Textiles and Travels in Scotland, A Tour of Gaelic Languages, and The Use of Tartan as a Jacobite Symbol.

Irish Deer Hounds
Bangers & Rumblethumps and Meat Pie Lunch

While there was Scotch whiskey and beer tasting, plus the standard Scotch eggs, fish-n-chips, and haggis; we settled for a Irn-Bru soda or tea with a meat pie and bangers and rumblethumps. It was a fun time.

Hi Pleinguy! That Scottish food looks great! I love meat pies… never had rumblethumps and had to google it. Oh, the Scotch and haggis sound delightful. You made me hungry. (Mum and I were in the UK back in ’94 and loved the food!) — VT

The food was pretty good as festival eats goes. They had a strawberry shortcake the size of a dinner plate… yummy.
