Mountain Arroyo

(nr Winston NM)
On another hike near my camp in the mountains, I came across a rather rocky arroyo. It was pretty steep and rugged with drop offs and sheer sides. I like the dramatic look.

An arroyo is a drainage that is usually dry, except when there is runoff from rain or snowmelt. Often resulting in flash floods, so the flow can be sudden, rapid and strong.

As the photos show, the waters can move rocks of considerable size. And, drag the soil a good distance. The results can be some pretty amazing reorganization of the landscape.

Rocks, drop offs, eroded walls, sandy washes, and imaging the water rushing through. Of course, this is all delightful to my eyes.

Nice formations. How are you doing with the virus and the fires out your way?
