Wild Rivers Again

(nr Questa NM)
The last time I visited the Wild Rivers Recreation Area, I stayed on the Red River side. This time I chose a camp on the Río Grande gorge. Part of the Río Grande del Norte National Monument, it sets on a mesa between the two rivers.

There were hiking trails going down into the gorge to the river. I began the one that went from the campground descending to the Río Grande. The trail was 1 mile one way, with a 760ft elevation change; and, of course I would need to hike back up. I soon discovered it was too steep for my old legs; so I gave up and turned back.

Much of the area was closed due to trail maintenance after washouts from the recent monsoons, resurfacing access and campsite pads in the campgrounds, and repaving of the main roadway. Only two of the five campgrounds were accessible.

So, activities were very limited. However, I did stop at a few overlooks and trailheads to photograph the gorge. The scenery and cliffs were dramatic, so I enjoyed exploring despite it being rather brief.

Thanks John. I was there about seven years ago, and thought it was a good time for another visit. Glad I went again

Thanks for the report. I figure my legs will not handle a lot of that territory anymore too. Be safe and have fun.

Yeah, getting old has its disadvantages. However, an area like that still has appeal for the dramatic landscape.
