Frugal Living

(Jacksonville FL)
I have mostly lived a frugal life. Being an artist and teacher has required it. Retirement and my RV travels should not be a major change. Still, my only income will be from my Social Security check, my art and internet sales. There is no pension or nestegg. So, I will be on a limited budget and will need to be a careful consumer. Here are some strategies I will use.

One major difference is that I will enter the journey completely debt free. There was a time when I used credit far too much, and it took years to overcome that error. Now I pay cash or pay off the card every month. At this point only a small mortgage remains on my house, which will be sold. I will also have an emergency fund, and a health savings account in place.

Buy only what I really need and use is part of downsizing the stuff. Purchase items used when possible and use them until they wear out. Try to fix things or re-purpose them before replacing. Shop more at thrift or discount stores to find real bargains. Compare prices and look for quality. Clothes will be limited to only what is needed yet comfortable, practical and durable. Eat out less and cook at home with nutritious and healthy foods. Get more exercise.

Many of these things I already do, but I want to improve. There is still time for me to adjust my habits. The success of my plein air journey will require the discipline to live frugally.

Hi Pleinguy – I’ll follow your journey as well. I just turned 71 and of course have Social Security and I worked for a bank for 32 years so I’m fortunate to have a retirement check as well. We plan to do some workamping as well – mostly volunteer work for discounted RV space. We are looking forward to our journey and hope it can start soon – once the house sells.

Thanks for stopping by Richard. I’m still a little ways from retiring, and I too must sell the house to buy my RV. Hoping things will fall into place as that time nears. Good luck!
