Spring Canyon

(Deming NM)
About four miles from Rockhound SP is Spring Canyon in the Big Florida Mountains. It’s a day use only park that has shelters with picnic tables and grills; no camping. A paved road goes all the way in. However, I would not go in with a long rig, as it may be difficult to turn around. Better to unhook your towed and drive up.

The canyon, rocks, mountains, and valley below provided dramatic views. I hiked up the Lovers Leap trail to take some photos; only went about two-thirds of the way to the top. However, still got some good shots of the rugged scenery.

On my way back down I saw a small clump of flowers I wanted to photograph closeup. I discovered that my camera was set to take sunset shots; which I was doing a couple of days before. That meant all my shots for the day had been with incorrect exposure. Luckily, I was able to salvage most of them with the computer during post processing.

The trip up Spring Canyon was done on the way to my next camp. And, it was an enjoyable hike and photo excursion. It had some really great scenery, so I recommend it for a picnic, hike or side trip.
