Pony Express #1

(Marysville KS)
The Pony Express mail service only lasted for 18 months. But, its relay riders have forever been lauded in the lore of the American west. Pony Express Home Station #1 was the first main stop west of Saint Joseph MO.

Today, the restored barn and a museum tell the story of that venture and the history of the town. Marysville also played host to the Overland Stagecoach company, a ferry, and emigrants crossing on the Oregon and California trails.

Bunk for Rider

The barn held typical items in a stable, blacksmith shop, and a bunk for the rider; just as it would have been back then. Relics of that era were displayed in the museum, and a guided tour by a docent explained it all.

About three blocks from the museum was the City Park which provided free camping for the night. Electric, water, and restrooms were provided. A short walk would get you to a playground and the city swimming pool. What a find!

Marysville looks like a nice destination town, but the camping sets it over the top!

It was a neat little town. And the free camp was a plus.
