Whitmore Falls

(nr Lake City CO)
I rode my bike about two miles further past the ghosttown of Capitol City to see Whitmore Falls. While not as well known, it was worth the short hike off the road. A path lead down a slope with some steps, then out onto a ledge and an observation deck.

Henson Creek gushed out from a gap in the cliff producing a tremendous flow with a drop of 40ft or more to a large pool at the bottom. The rugged cliffs surrounding it added to the excitement.

A side trail went down a steep embankment leading to the base of the falls. I didn’t venture because a family with several kids were just ahead of me. That would have meant my photo opportunity would include them frolicking in the water. No thanks!

I did poke around in the bushes and trees to find a better view of the falls. A rock pile provided a different angle, but it was a bit precarious. A pretty waterfall for little effort.

Beautiful spot. Thanks for sharing. If you go west of Pueblo, Phantom Canyon is great and may be a chance to warm up a bit.

I’ve gotten behind. Glad to see you’re still out on the road, my friend. Where do you plan to spend the winter?

Nice to hear from you Ralph. I expect to be wandering around the southwest this winter.
