Río Guadalupe Canyon

(Cañon NM)
The Río Guadalupe flowed down between the Sierra Nacimiento and the Jémez Mountains through a deep canyon with rugged cliffs. It was often difficult to see the river because of the deep gorge. High mesas surrounded the canyon area.

Pullouts along the narrow road provided photo opportunities. Tall, jagged cliffs arose from the river up to the higher mesas. It made for some fantastic views. Had to pay attention because it was up hill on one side of the road, and a drop off on the other.

Huge Redrock Cliffs

Near the Gilman Tunnels were a few small waterfalls or cascades. The river splashing over rocks is always a pleasure to see. I visited in the Fall, but suspect that Springtime would have provided more flowing water.

This was a fairly short drive, and rewarded me with some wonderful rocks and water scenes. So glad I decided to make the effort, even though going with an RV was not recommended.

Just one more shot before returning to camp. Gotta love it!

Beautiful pictures Pleinguy. I was curious about “nacimiento” because I know that in Spanish it means “birth”… A quick check showed that it also means “source [of a river]”…. Looks like it was very scenic. How warm has it been there?

My visit to the canyon was in September. I’m way behind on my posts. However, in February in southern New Mexico it is mid 50s to low 60s for highs, and mid 20s to low 30s for lows. Still considered winter for another month. But, in the Jémez Mountains it would be way colder.
