Catwalk Revisited

(Glenwood NM)
The Catwalk National Recreational Trail followed what was an old mining pipeline up into a narrow canyon. Portions of the metal walkway were attached to the vertical rock walls. That allowed access without having to wade in Whitewater Creek below. It also made for some great views.

A flood closed this trail for a couple of years while the suspended walkway was rebuilt. (see Catwalk link below) Due to the difficulty and cost of rebuilding they have only restored it to halfway up at this point. Hopefully, more will be repaired.

Beyond the repaired portion, the trail was still in bad shape and required hiking along the creek. Technically, further on was still closed due to dangerous conditions. Continue at your own risk! Large boulders and fallen trees would make for a difficult exploration.

More trails are found near the top of the canyon. I went a bit further to look at the damage. But, decided to quit at a point where the trail had collapsed. If I were younger, or in better shape, I would have ventured.

The creek flows year-round, and can have small waterfalls, and refreshing wading pools. Near the parking lot were picnic tables under large sycamore trees, and restrooms. A day use fee was charged, but the federal senior or access pass would cover it.

I still want to go there but I have no idea when it will get to the top of the LONG LIST of special things to see in NM.

It will be there for awhile; unless they have another flood.
