Mennonite Museum

(Ciudad Cuauhtémoc MX)
We stopped to see the Mennonite Museum which was built like their typical barn and home combo. Storage, workshops, equipment, animal shelter and living space all-in-one construction.

A guide took us through the different sections, and explained how each area was used. Their ways and customs were described with samples of furnishings, clothing, tools, etc.

They were pretty self sufficient making most of the things they needed. Families were large, so there were many hands to do the work. Today, there are mostly traditional members living in historical style and some liberal members adopting more modern ways.

A group of Mennonites from Canada migrated to this part of Mexico in the early 1920s. Farming was and is their primary occupation, and they now work miles and miles of land all over the region.

They are also well known for a special cheese they make. It was interesting learning about their way of life.

I’m wondering if they were ever persecuted over the years.

No mention of that. Other than not baptising infants (anabaptist), and their conservative ways, they seem pretty normal. Probably the longer growing season and milder weather were major reasons for moving there.

I thought there was backlash about them being German-speaking post-WWI and that was the reason they left Canada in the 1920s??

I think you’re correct about that. But, I don’t recall any issues once they were in Mexico.

No issues at all since they’ve been in Mexico – at least that’s how I understood it
