Big Eddy

(nr Abiquiú Lake NM)
Big Eddy was a bend in the Río Chama where a sandy take-out is used by rafters to get off the river. On the opposite side of the river were sheer cliffs, which made for a dramatic view.

Just upstream were some rocky shoals causing some roiling of the water. That, a sharp bend causing an eddy, and the cliffs on one side with a sandy shore on the other are signals that they have reached the take-out.

I stayed about 1/4 mile further up the road at a designated dispersed camping area next to the river. Several spots among the trees provided shade, while sounds of the river flowing by, and pretty scenery made for a nice camp.

Another Spot with Shoals

Driving in on a somewhat rocky forest service road with one lane and occasional pullouts made me wonder if the 6 mile drive would be worthwhile. It turned out to be a pleasant spot with good views.

The water rose in the river while I was there, so the kayakers liked it. Yeah, it was pretty good.
