Río Grande Trail Segment

(Arrey NM)
This is a new trail across the state (designated in 2015) that runs along the river from Mexico to Colorado. Currently, it only exists in segments of state or federal lands with plans to expand as funds and permits allow. It passes through BLM, state parks, national monuments, and wildlife refuges.

Río Grande Trail Segment – Caballo Mountain in Distance

This part was accessed from Percha Dam State Park. The trail was rocky by the river edge; sandy in the bushes and trees. It was a fairly level and easy walk for about a mile one way, with a few access points to the river. The trail also goes from the campground for a mile in the opposite direction.

Standing Dead Cottonwood
Roots Seeking Water

There were plenty of trees dominated by cottonwoods. Lots of standing or fallen dead ones. The large naked one in the photo is an example. A tangle of roots reaching into the river was interesting. And, the one covered with mistletoe caught my eye.

Slow Flow in River

The river was very low, which is normal for late in the year; a time for catching the snow melt and runoff in the reservoirs. In the spring, the water will be slowly released to supply irrigation for farms. The trail is a nice addition for hiking, biking, and horseback riding near the river.
