Painting on iPad

After much consideration, I decided that traditional painting on canvas was not going to work well with my lifestyle of traveling in a small RV. However, I didn’t want to give up my art habit. So, I’ve decided to try digital painting on my iPad. I like that managing materials, storage, marketing, and bookkeeping for physical paintings can all be eliminated. Painting digitally will just be for exercising my creative juices, and enjoyment.

I have long had several art apps which have been used somewhat; but, not enough to be proficient in any. ArtRage and Art Set have been tried for painting; and I like how they render paint texture. When I sketch, the apps Paper and Linea Sketch are good for simple drawings. However, I decided to concentrate on learning to use Procreate, as it seems to be more full-featured and is good for both drawing and painting.

Orb and Sombrero
Brushstrokes Practice

These are a few of my practice pieces with Procreate. While they are not complete or polished, they have allowed me to start getting familiar with the tools and techniques which differ greatly from traditional materials. With continued attempts, I hope to develop techniques that simulate painting as I know it.

Rocks

A sheet of brushstrokes with various types, sizes, opacity, and pressure. The drawing of an orb and a sombrero using pencil and charcoal tools. And, two paintings; each done on one layer with a single brush. I hope to share more as I progress.

Thank you for sharing these images, Pleinguy. Your attempts are impressive. The “Rocks” piece, to me, is the most convincing. The marks, warm and cool, and modeling are well done. Enjoy the ride!

Thank you for the kind words Aliye. I am enjoying learning to paint a new way. It certainly is different than paint on canvas. Hopefully, some good work will result.

    Hey Pleinguy,
Enjoyed the Procreate app renderings. Especially the rocks and sombrero. Looking forward to seeing more. What stylus are you using?

Glad you liked them Mark. I’m using an 11 inch iPad Pro with an Apple Pencil 2 for these pieces.

It should be entertaining; if nothing else. You seem to be making good progress with your color pencil paintings. Thanks for following along Barney.
