Dry Fork Petroglyphs

(nr Vernal UT)
I learned about the petroglyphs in Dry Fork Canyon just a few miles from town. I’m intrigued by these native images; so, I had to go have a look-see.

The rock art is located on the private McConkie Ranch, so also goes by that name. There is a donation fee for parking, and two marked paths for finding the drawings.

Shamans?

They are attributed to the native Fremont culture that inhabited the area from about 1,000 to 1,200 AD. Most of the pictures were human likenesses, which seemed a bit unusual. Some figures were up to nine feet tall.

I spent a good while checking out the rock art against a 200ft high sandstone cliff. I appreciate that the family continues to allow public access to this historic site.

Stunning. And NO graffiti. The owners are being generous, and it looks as if so far, there haven’t been any problems. Thanks.
