Balanced Rock was visible from a pull-out along the road. There was a picnic shelter so you could linger if you chose. But the real attraction, just a mile down the road, was a little oasis that you could easily miss.
A very nice campground was nestled in a narrow canyon with tall cliffs on both sides, lots of trees, and a creek. It was much cooler there than atop the mesa. Mowed grass along the creek with ducks, and a swing set gave it a park like setting.
There were shelters, tables, grills, trash barrels, and pit toilets. A sign said it was created by an Idaho RV group; and it was free. What a find! However, there was no internet down there; otherwise, I might have stayed longer.
It was a cool spot to spend a night camping for free. Then, I moved on to the next adventure.
Camp: Balanced Rock CG – free dry camp
Scene: Rocks, cliffs, creek, trees
This goes on MY list of free places. Thanks so much.
Glad the post was helpful. It was a pretty nice spot. Getting there seems improbable atop the mesa. But, the road dips down below the rim and to the camp at the bottom of a narrow canyon.
