(Gneiss NC)
The road to my next camp took me along the Cullasaja River south of Franklin. Winding through the mountains, I came upon another watery and rocky scene. The spot was known by locals as Bust Your Butt Cascades.
I could see how it got the name. There was a nice incline, although not too steep. The water was low; but, when running normally, it would rush over the rocks. Anyone in the stream would be swept from rock to rock, busting their butt on the way.
A couple of pools there would make nice swimming holes. One had a rope dangling from a tree which was quite suitable for swinging out to drop into the deep spot. In my mind, I could see folks running, sliding, splashing, and yelling; just having a good ol’ time.
On I went to the camp on the narrow mountain road. I snagged the one spot in the woodsy campground that had an opening for my solar panels. The sites were well spaced and separated by trees and shrubbery.
Camp: Nantahala NF-Van Hook Glade CG drycamp
Scene: River, cascades, rocks
Note: This visit occurred in October.
It looks like a very attractive spot, and I wonder how the crowds are during the summer months.
Don’t know. But, I suspect it is a fairly popular spot.
