(Highlands NC)
Near to the campground was Cliffside Lake with a 3/4 mile loop trail that went around it and through the forest. At many points the path was right by the water.
Several other trails headed off into the forest. One was called Clifftop Vista; although, I couldn’t see a cliff due to the woods. There was a small dam, with a little water flowing over into Skitty Creek.
At one end of the lake, there was a swimming area, shower house, restrooms, and ranger office. Also around the lake, were some picnic areas, and a few designated fishing spots.
Some trees were finally beginning to show fall colors. I lingered to get some photos. It was a very pleasant stroll through the woods.
Camp: Nantahala NF-Van Hook Glade CG drycamp
Scene: Lake, trees, trails
Note: This visit occurred in October.
I love the reds in the fall foliage. It just isn’t the same in the west with mostly goldens and yellows. There is nothing like fall in the east!
While I have seen some red in the west, it is not as spectacular as in the east. Both are marvelous to me.
