(nr Vernal UT)
A side trip into Donkey Flat, just north of Vernal, proved to be more challenging and rewarding than I expected.
Rocks, cliffs and gnarly trees are some of my favorite views; all of which were plentiful. The trail was not well marked, so I found myself going on whatever path took me to a good viewpoint. Some were meant for hiking and others for mountain biking.
A short hike, to see some of the red rock formations, turned into a long meander up and down several crossing trails. I was not really prepared for the distance or the fantastic scenery I encountered.
When I emerged from the trails, I found myself two miles away from Tardis and the original trailhead. I recognized the road as the one I drove in on. So, it was just a matter of walking back. Several cars passed me, but none stopped to offer a ride.
It was more of a workout than planned. However, the exercise probably did my body good, and experiencing the red rock back country surely enriched my spirit.
