My time in Florida accomplished most of what I intended. However, I found it was too humid, too hot, too many people, too much traffic, more costly than I like. And, I was getting itchy feet. Despite my initial idea of spending the winter in Florida, I decided to move on.
Grayton Beach FL
The southwest was calling me; and, I wanted to be there for the end of year holidays. That meant a quick trip across the Gulf states, rather than meandering as I normally would. Taking US-98, I-10, and US-90 was the most direct route.
Pecos River near Del Rio TX
Stops were only made to get gas, to eat, and to overnight. Food and gas occurred in Miramar Beach FL, Theodore AL, Vidor TX, Seguin TX, Del Rio TX, Sanderson TX and Van Horn TX. Overnights were taken at Grayton Beach State Park in the Florida panhandle, a Texas Safety Stop near Hankamer, and at the Marfa Lights observation area in west Texas.
Tardis at Caballo Lake NM
Consideration was given to drive through the Louisiana bayous, or to visit a couple of places in Texas. But, since it rained almost the whole time, I wouldn’t have done much exploring anyway. Instead, I continued driving and arrived in New Mexico in only four days.

Quick question for you (which you probably have explained elsewhere, and someday I review your whole blog): do you use a particular tool, app, or some technique to capture your maps that you include.
I like the idea, and would be interested in doing something similar.

There are apps that help you create a route overlaid on a map. But, the ones I’ve seen are pretty complicated, and require an Internet connection to display properly.
I simply capture a screen shot, and then use the Pixelmator app to markup my route and details. Then, I save it as an image and upload it to the blog.

I remember when I used to drive across country in 4 days, and hope I never have to do it again. This isn’t the best time of year for traveling. So I guess, the best idea is to just get to where you want to be as quickly as possible.
My mad dash was in November. Still, the weather was not pleasant for traveling. Hence, the quickness of the move. Hope you are holding up during all this wet and wind.
