Red Canyon

(nr Panguitch UT)
On the way to my next camp, I came across the fantastic rock formations in Red Canyon. There was a nice Visitor Center with displays, an old ranger’s Guard Station, hiking and biking trails, and even horseback riding options further into the canyon.

I chose to hike the easy one mile loop called Pink Ledges. It circled around beneath the cliffs, and included a trail guide explaining the features. There were some ups and downs, but it was not really difficult.

The scenery included ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, manzanita, and piñon pine trees. There were also Rocky Mountain juniper, Oregon grape, primrose, and yucca plants. The Least chipmunk was supposed to be about, but I didn’t see them.

Rock Window

Gnarly tree trunks and fallen logs created an interesting contrast to the colorful rocks. Cliffs, hoodoos, narrow passages, and rock windows made for a delightful variety of views along the path.

Needless to say, I was very pleased to see this wonderful place, and enjoyed my visit very much. Afterward, I went looking for a boondocking camp in the forest not too far away.
