(nr Seneca AZ)
Traveling on US-60/AZ-77, north of Globe, I came to the Salt River Canyon. Some pretty serious twisties and elevation changes took me across the river. Stopped for some photos at a pullout.
The river is known for some good whitewater rafting. Pretty impressive cliffs, but the really good stuff is supposed to be well off the highway. Not sure what to say about it, so I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.
Continued on to Show Low, got gas, dinner, and then spent overnight in a Walmart parking lot. Not something I do often.
Camp: Overnight Wal-Mart
Scene: Canyon, cliffs, river
My one time in a Walmart parking lot was last year and very pleasant. Still not my first choice but it was handy and needed that night.
Yes, they are handy. And, I’m grateful they make the option available.
Very nice rocks!
Yes, they are… cliffs show off the rocks quite well.
Nice scenery! I hear ya about Wal-mart; well, the price is right, at least! Isn’t that so often the case though about highways? Some of the scenery we want to see is off the path a bit. By the way, I was in Globe in 1973 (family trip) and 2004 (graduation trip for Univ. of Phoenix). It’s really pretty country!
Take care! — VT
So true about the better views being off the main road. Glad you got to see the area.
