A long drive off the paved highway, on a good gravel road, took me to the headwaters of the Río Grande. Several creeks emptied into the canyon gradually merging to form the river.
With the river dammed, a large reservoir was created to control the flow downstream. It was very scenic with the tall pines, rocky shore and snow capped mountains in the distance.
The roadway followed the river and edge of the lake. Rocks, water, greenery, and a clear blue sky made for a beautiful trip. I was glad to have finally seen the area where the big river begins.
Camp had only six well spaced sites and was next to a small creek with trees for shade. It was a nice spot to rest and relax.

Just going to places in order to find cooler weather during the summer. Lucky for me that they turn out to be beautiful spots.
WOW that is a nice place to visit. It sounds like I could tow my small trailer into that area safely.
For sure Barney. And, there are several free Forest Service campgrounds along the way.
Beautiful, breathtaking scenery! I’d love to camp for a couple of days in cool weather near those pine trees. When you’re out there can you smell the pine trees? If so, I imagine it’s heavenly. — VT
Yes, there is a pine scent by the trees. Great camping!
