Looking for a boondock camp over 5,000ft, the forest service website indicted there were spots on Frye Mesa next to a reservoir. Once up there, there was no way to get off the road. Plus, the only spot by the water was not level and only suitable for tent camping.
Getting to the top of the mesa meant driving a steep, narrow, rocky, gravel, one lane road with many switchbacks. Straight up one side and straight down the other. It had no pullouts, so had another vehicle been on the road, there was no way to pass. I should have never attempted it; very risky.
The mesa set right against the 10,000+ft Piñaleno Mountains; it was what I would call a bench. Unfortunately, a futile attempt to find a campsite with nice temperatures. However, the views from there were impressive.

Excellent report and important info also. Thank you.
Glad to help. Not a place I would recommend. Unless you are going for a look-see in a jeep.
