The Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area mostly follows the Gila River and can be accessed via the Black Hills Back Country Byway from either the east or the west. Other primitive roads require 4-wheel-drive.
Besides the Gila River it also includes the San Francisco River, Bonita Creek, Eagle Creek, and the Black Hills. These waterways attract lots of vegetation, animals and birds.
Rafting on the river, picnicking, camping, horseback riding, hiking, mountain bicycling, bird watching, hunting and fishing are typical activities. There is a log cabin homestead and rock art, but I didn’t find either.
Dispersed camping is not allowed by the waterways. There are two campgrounds; Owl Creek CG in the east and Riverview CG in the west. I stayed at both.

Thanks for another great report. You are finding the nice corners of the area for sure.
Thanks Barney. Some I find, others I miss. Glad you liked it.
Beautiful! It doesn’t look like the drought has hurt the area too much. I’m glad. Happy trails to you!
Near the water things look fine, but away is pretty dry. Thanks for the comment Rick.
